DWP to Issue Letters to Pensioners Regarding £200 and £300 Payments

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) will send out letters to state pensioners in England and Wales for winter fuel payments of £300 and £200 in 2026. These payments are designed to help pensioners with their winter heating bills. The eligibility criteria for this year’s payments have been confirmed, and they will be issued to pensioner households in November or December 2026.

To be eligible, pensioners must be born before June 28, 1960. The payments will vary depending on the pensioner’s date of birth and circumstances during the ‘qualifying week’ between September 21 and 27, 2026.

Payment Breakdown

If you live alone, the payment you receive will depend on your birthdate:

  • £200 if born between September 28, 1946 and June 27, 1960
  • £300 if born before September 28, 1946

If you live with someone who is also eligible for the winter fuel payment, your payment amount may be different, especially if you receive benefits like Pension Credit, Universal Credit, or income-related Employment and Support Allowance.

When Will You Receive the Payment?

Eligible pensioners will receive a letter in October or November 2026 detailing the exact amount of their payment. Most will receive the payment before January 2027.

If you do not receive a letter but believe you are eligible, you should check whether you need to make a claim.

How Payments Are Handled

The payment you receive will not affect any other benefits you are entitled to. If your income exceeds £35,000, the payment may be reclaimed by:

  • Adjusting your tax code
  • Adding the payment to your Self Assessment tax return

Automatic Payment for Most Pensioners

If you receive any of the following benefits, you do not need to do anything to claim your winter fuel payment:

  • State Pension
  • Pension Credit
  • Universal Credit
  • Attendance Allowance
  • Personal Independence Payment (PIP)
  • Carer’s Allowance
  • Disability Living Allowance (DLA)
  • Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
  • War Pensions Scheme awards
  • Industrial Injuries Disablement Benefit
  • Incapacity Benefit
  • Industrial Death Benefit

If you do not receive any of these benefits, you will need to make a claim if:

  • You have not received the winter fuel payment before
  • You have deferred your State Pension since your last payment
