The Department for Work & Pensions has confirmed that automatic bonus payments are being issued to state pensioners born between 1946 & 1960. This support comes through the Winter Fuel Payment scheme that helps older residents in England and Wales manage rising heating costs during colder months.

Eligible individuals who live alone or do not share a home with someone who qualifies can receive £200 if they were born between 28 September 1946 and 27 June 1960. Those aged 80 or above may receive a higher payment of up to £300 per household.
To qualify you must have reached State Pension age. Most recipients will automatically receive the payment without needing to apply. The amount will be transferred directly into the same bank account used for pensions or other government benefits.
A confirmation letter will typically be sent between October & November outlining the exact amount & payment details. Payments are expected to begin from mid-November 2025.
Some individuals may need to submit a claim. This applies if you have deferred your State Pension and are not receiving any other DWP benefits or if specifically requested by the DWP.
If your annual income exceeds £35000 then HMRC will recover the Winter Fuel Payment through the tax system. If you wish to avoid receiving the payment altogether you must opt out by completing the official form before 20 September 2026 or contacting the helpline by 18 September 2026.
Residents of Scotland are not eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment. Instead they may qualify for the Pension Age Winter Heating Payment that is administered by the Scottish Government.
If you do not opt out & your income exceeds the threshold then the payment will be reclaimed automatically. Individuals cannot return the money manually.
