UK Airport Security Update 2026: New Hand Luggage Restrictions Introduced at Major Hub

Passengers traveling through one of the world’s busiest aviation hubs, Singapore Changi Airport, will soon face new restrictions on power banks in hand luggage. Starting April 15, 2026, the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore will implement updated regulations allowing passengers to carry a maximum of two power banks in their hand luggage. Those carrying more than two will be required to dispose of the excess devices before boarding.

New Rules and Safety Concerns

The move comes in response to safety concerns regarding lithium-ion batteries, which are commonly used in portable chargers. These batteries can overheat, short-circuit, and potentially cause fires. As part of these new rules, passengers will also be prohibited from charging power banks during flights and advised not to use them to charge other devices while on board.

Impact on Passengers and Airlines

Changi Airport, which saw around 70 million passengers in 2025, is a major global transit hub. Therefore, these changes are significant for international travellers, especially those on long-haul journeys, including UK travellers passing through. The updated rules are part of broader safety measures aimed at reducing fire risks while allowing passengers to carry essential devices.

Enforcement and Further Safety Measures

Airlines operating from Singapore will be responsible for informing passengers about the new restrictions, and airport staff will be trained to enforce the updated requirements. Notices will also be displayed throughout the terminals to remind travellers of the changes. Additionally, existing rules, such as the ban on power banks in checked luggage and the requirement for devices to be stored in protective cases to prevent short-circuiting, will remain in place.

The Dangers of Lithium-Ion Batteries

Experts have long warned about the dangers of lithium-ion batteries if they are damaged or poorly manufactured. In extreme cases, these batteries can trigger “thermal runaway,” a chain reaction that leads to intense fires and toxic fumes. This latest move at Changi Airport follows a wider crackdown across the aviation industry, with several airlines, including Emirates and Vietnam Airlines, already introducing similar restrictions or outright bans on the use of power banks during flights.

Key Changes to Power Bank Rules

Rule Details
Power Bank Limit Passengers allowed to carry a maximum of two power banks in hand luggage.
Charging Restrictions No charging of power banks during flights and no use for charging other devices on board.
Power Bank in Checked Luggage Power banks are still banned in checked luggage.
Safety Precautions Devices must be stored in protective cases to avoid short-circuiting.

These new measures reflect ongoing efforts to enhance safety in aviation while balancing the need for passengers to carry essential devices during travel.
