DVLA Licence Action 2026: Over 33,000 Driving Licences Cancelled as Stricter Enforcement Begins Across the UK

More than 30,000 people in the UK have lost their driving licenses because of health problems that affect their eyesight. Over the course of four years, 32,944 drivers had their licenses taken away or were not allowed to renew them because there were worries that they might be dangerous on the road.

If you don’t, you could get a fine or lose your license. Ministers are now moving forward with plans to make eyesight tests mandatory for drivers over the age of 70. This is because they are worried that the current system of self-reporting isn’t strict enough.

According to the Express, the largest group was people between the ages of 70 and 79, with 10,794 cases. For drivers aged 80 to 89, 8,060 more licenses were taken away, and for those over 90, 1,202 more Chancellor Rachel Reeves has announced new charges and measures that will affect drivers as part of a larger set of changes to motoring policy.

Ben Welham, a car expert at Marshall Motor Group, said, “Vision loss usually happens slowly, so drivers may not notice small changes over time.” The data shows that this is not limited to one age group, so keeping your vision healthy is important at all stages of life. “Regular professional eye tests are still the safest way to make sure you meet the legal standard and can keep driving with confidence.”

Authorities have warned that more and more drivers could lose their licenses if they don’t meet the new stricter standards that are coming.
