Aldi is the first supermarket in the UK to implement the new £13.50 rule in a matter of days. For 28,000 of its in-store employees, the change is a huge boost.

Store assistants in UK branches will start earning £13.50 per hour on Wednesday, April 1, while those working inside the M25 will earn £14.88.
Depending on the length of service, their pay rates rise to £14.47 and £15.20, respectively. 28,000 hourly store employees will benefit from the change, according to the German chain. This is the second pay increase for Aldi teams in 2026 alone, following the announcement in January of higher rates and an extension of maternity pay to 26 weeks at full pay.

The grocery giant claims that it is the only large supermarket that provides paid breaks to all of its employees, an annual benefit for the typical store employee of about £1,500.
“Our colleagues work incredibly hard to deliver exceptional value for our customers, and we’re rewarding that dedication with the highest pay in the sector,” stated Giles Hurley, chief executive of Aldi UK and Ireland.

“We know that every member of Team Aldi is essential to our success and deserves nothing less, which is why we have invested over £42 million in colleague pay this year.”
With plans to open 40 new stores in 2026 as part of a £370 million investment program, Aldi continues to grow quickly and employs over 45,000 people throughout the United Kingdom.
Additionally, according to Aldi, it is “upgrading and extending existing stores, reinforcing its position as one of Britain’s fastest-growing food retailers.”
The action is a component of Aldi’s £1.6 billion two-year investment plan, which was unveiled last year in an effort to fulfil the chain’s long-term goal of opening 1,500 stores in the UK.
